There was plenty wrong with Hemingway but nothing wrong with his honest commitment to the Republic of Spain and nothing wrong with his admiration and care for the men in the Brigades and in the Spanish Divisions and nothing wrong with his respect for the Spanish people. He proved it by his actions.1

On the 27 February 1937, Hemingway sailed from New York to France on his way to Spain as correspondent for The North American News Agency, known as NANA. It is surprising that Ernest Hemingway left it so late to investigate the war in Spain. His first despatches describe his arrival by air from Toulouse, touching down at Barcelona, which had just suffered an air raid by Italian bombers. Narrowly missing involvement in a dog-fight over Barcelona between Italian aircraft and Russian pursuit planes, the tri-motor passenger aircraft flew on along the coast of Valencia to the air-strip at Alicante. Hemingway booked in to the Hotel Florida in Madrid and sent off his first despatch to his employers, in which he described the random killing of civilians in the streets of the capital. His description of the curious tricks of shells, which Hemingway identifies as 155mm, resemble the surrealist writings of Dalí. Limbs fly through the air alongside fruit from a barrow. The decapitated body of a man in a suit is blown onto a heap of rubble as though arranged for an exhibition.
